Prussian-Smack-Down Angel & The Beast (November 2006)

For those unfamiliar with customising, the pale pink stuff is the colour of the 'super sculpey' sculpting clay that I put over the plastic figures. It can be translucent, so you can often see the original colour of the figure underneath. Once I've finished sculpting, I always completely repaint the whole figure.

I was commissioned to make Angel and The Beast from the "Soulless" flashback. I decided to make them at the moment that Angel disses The Beast and gets punched out.

Sculpting

Thanks to Moore Action Collectibles, Diamond Select Toys, ToyBiz and McFarlane for the parts.

For The Beast, I originally tried to use a Berserker Urk-Hai. It didn't work, though, because it is harder to alter one large creature into another of a different shape than it is to sculpt a creature-suit over a man. After all, this was a TV character, not a graphic character, so it was a man in a suit.

I used a WWW wrestler. The head and right hand came from a different wrestler, which I had painted green (long story). To make him even taller, I lowered his knees, removed the feet and added height in his stacked hooves. I also made the neck longer. I think the proportions work quite well now. I sculpted the horns and crusty skin.

For Angel, I used the ill-looking Angel head, Angel 1 legs, a Fred torso and Spike hands. I resculpted the entire figure.

Painting

For The Beast, I painted him grey all over. I then added red details in the grooves between his crusty skin. When he was dry, I used black with a dry brush to get the crusted-over lava effect.

For Angel, I painted him the 1789 clothing, with blood and bruises from getting punched. I used a stand that came with Kate from Lost. I just removed the backdrop and some of the branches. Although it was originally supposed to be a jungle, I think the stand works quite well for a Prussian forest.
